Applying for your provisional driving licence
If you want to learn to drive a car, you must be in possession of a valid provisional driving licence. The same holds true if you want to learn to drive a motorcycle or a moped.
How do I apply for my provisional driving licence?
There are a few different ways that you can apply for your provisional licence. You can either apply online, in person or by sending in a postal application.
Applying online
You can make an online application for a British provisional licence if you:
- Are at least 17 years of age
- Have an official form of identity such as a UK passport
- Are resident in Great Britain
- You meet the minimum eyesight requirement
- There are no reasons that you are prevented from driving
- Pay £50
- Can provide proof of address for the last three years

Applying by post
- Fill in the D1 application form that is available at the Post Office or from the DVLA form ordering service.
- You will need to send in original identification documents, a passport sized photo and the £50 application fee.
- Post your form to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD.
Applying in person
- You can make your application in person at a DVLA office, you may need to make an appointment first.
- You will need your ID documents, passport photo and the £50 application fee.
